Every time we talk about someone's intelligence, our discussions usually center on "IQ". But is it a real measure of intelligence or just a sham? People tell IQ with the same confidence they'd state their height and weight. You may argue that high IQ means better prospects, but that's not entirely true.

According to Elsevier's Encyclopedia of Genetics, IQ is a standardized statistical construct made to assess cognitive ability, not some physical measurement of any underlying biological substance in your brain. What happens in your brain cannot be measured by any ruler or scale. An "IQ score" is actually a snapshot of performance rather than a reading of a dial.

Confused? How is a performance snapshot different from a reading of a dial? The difference might look small, but it's significant. Unlike a thermometer or any other device, IQ doesn't measure something that is directly observable, physical, or absolute. To understand how it works and its relationship to intelligence, we'll have to explore more data.

Where "Intelligence" Even Comes From

The origins of IQ date to the early 20th century, when researchers applied multivariate statistics to mental performance, according to the Encyclopedia of Genetics. They administered verbal, visuospatial, and reasoning tasks to participants; they extracted what became known as the "general factor of ability," or g.

Later on, they expressed an individual score as a deviation from the population average of 100. And that's how they built an entire architecture in which a comparative score is derived from test batteries, not a direct read of gray matter in the brain. Psychologists never fully agreed on what "intelligence" is supposed to mean in the first place, which makes the statistical instrument built to be inherently challenged.

In the ERIC database by Rani and Prakash, you can trace and observe how the definition of intelligence changed. In 1914, Stern described intelligence as the general capacity to consciously adjust one's thinking to new problems and life conditions, also called the brain's adaptability.

Thorndike, in 1914, called it the power to produce good responses, judged against truth or fact. In 1921, Terman linked intelligence directly to the capacity for abstract thought. Later, in 1944, Wechsler went beyond the conventions and called it an aggregate capacity to act purposefully, think rationally, and deal effectively with one's environment.

No single definition could capture what intelligence is. Piaget reduced it to adaptation to one's surroundings. And Howard Gardner was one of the psychologists to reject the single-trait model, arguing that human intelligence comprises several distinct modalities rather than a single, measurable entity.

Once the abstract concept of intelligence was understood, the field split over whether intelligence is a composite of separate underlying abilities or a single unified capacity. The unresolvable debate persists. So, if researchers can't settle on what the word means, it is worth being cautious, and it would be unfair to confine human intelligence to a number or a measurement.

What the Genetics Actually Show

Does it mean that IQ is a meaningless number? The answer is no! Genetics suggests that heritability is real and substantial, as shown in a landmark 1981 review published in Science and cited in the Encyclopedia of Genetics. 

After synthesizing decades of family and twin studies, Bouchard and McGue found a clear genetic gradient in IQ correlations. Their study showed identical twins raised together correlate at 0.86, full siblings at 0.47, half-siblings at 0.31, and cousins at 0.15. The steep drop in correlation among cousins is hard evidence that biology plays a real role in cognitive test performance.

Assuming that heritability is fixed and simple is also wrong.  Heritability tends to rise across the lifespan, whereas the influence of shared environment fades, a pattern researchers have noted and attributed to a few overlapping causes, such as gene switching as the brain matures. Or people seeking an environment that fits their genetic disposition. 

In simpler terms, nature does not operate in isolation; it interacts with experience in ways that only become visible over years. Also, there is no single "smart gene". The Encyclopedia of Genetics says intelligence is governed by thousands of genes of small individual effect working together across biological pathways.

Moreover, people thought that genes such as ASPM and Microcephalin were responsible for human brain evolution via accelerated natural selection. Neither of them has been actually linked to intelligence. The story of cognition is not concentrated in a handful of dramatic mutations but is diffuse.

The Test Only Measures What Shows Up

McGuire (1994), in the Rani and Prakash paper, noted that intelligence can be observed insofar as it appears on a specific assessment battery. So, that's all. An IQ test has real constraints: it isn't measuring the raw capacity of your brain but measuring performance under specific, artificial conditions.

Similar to Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RPM), a commonly used nonverbal test designed around abstract pattern recognition, chosen specifically because it doesn't depend on language. According to Rani and Prakash, the RPM shows a strong internal consistency (0.88) and solid criterion validity, showing it does a genuinely good job predicting performance in jobs requiring general mental ability.

As cited, Yelan (1978) argued that intelligence tests are best for predicting aptitude and learning, but do not measure a fixed or already accomplished skill. A high-intelligence score signifies your ability to learn, but does not certify your finished, permanent traits. Also, environment plays a more critical role than people assume.

Intelligence is not the exclusive property of any caste, race, or cultural group, and score disparities between groups are driven more by environmental circumstances than by innate differences, as cited in an ERIC study by Dandekar and Sanyoglatha (2000). The survey of 1,564 high-school students by Rani and Prakash supports this claim.

Students in English-medium schools and matriculation-board institutions scored significantly higher than those in Tamil-medium state board schools. The researchers did not attribute this to any innate gap, but pointed to pedagogy. It means the lower scores are caused by how schools teach, not by any natural or permanent lack of intelligence of students.

So, Is IQ Real?

The last question is whether to believe in IQ or not, or whether IQ is real or just a gimmick. The answer is it is as real as a thermometer reading. It is a genuine, reproducible measurement of something, but not of the thing people often assume. It is not a measurement of some physical quantity sitting inside your brain, but measures performance based on a specific set of tasks under specific conditions.

On the other hand, genetics plays a significant role, as we have seen in twin studies. The twin studies place adult heritability at 60 to 80 percent, and the correlation gradient across relative tracks shared DNA almost perfectly. However, there is no single smart gene, as every gene and its interactions with the environment across your lifetime are responsible for your intelligence.

In short, IQ is not a lie or a myth, and is a highly useful and well-validated predictor of certain kinds of aptitude. However, it focuses mainly on specific cognitive skills like working memory, pattern recognition, and logical reasoning, and misses many forms of mental ability, such as creativity, emotional understanding, and practical problem-solving.
