Instagram Instants: What It Is & How It Works

Instagram has launched a new feature called Instants, introducing a new way for users to share everyday moments with friends quickly and in real time. Officially announced on May 13, 2026, by Instagram and its parent company, Meta, the feature is designed to make photo sharing simpler, faster, and more natural. Instants focuses on casual, spontaneous sharing rather than polished social media content, allowing users to send unfiltered photos without editing tools or creative pressure. The feature is now available globally within the Instagram app, while a separate standalone Instants app is also being introduced in selected countries for users who want faster access to the camera.

What Is Instagram Instants?

Instagram Instants is a new photo-sharing feature created for private, real-time communication between friends. Unlike traditional Instagram posts, Stories, or Reels, which often involve curated and carefully prepared content, Instants is centered around sharing authentic moments as they happen. Users are not allowed to upload old photos from their gallery, as every Instant must be captured live using the camera at that exact moment.

According to Instagram, this approach helps preserve authenticity and keeps the experience focused on real-time sharing. Users can send Instants either to their Close Friends list or to mutual followers, meaning people they follow who also follow them back. The feature is integrated directly into Instagram’s direct messaging inbox, making it easily accessible during conversations.

How Instants Works

Using Instants is designed to be simple and intuitive. To use the feature, users open Instagram and navigate to their inbox, where they will find a small stack of photos in the bottom-right corner. Tapping this icon opens the Instants camera, allowing users to capture a live photo immediately.

Before sending the photo, users can add a caption, choose the recipients, and then tap the white share button to send it. While captions are allowed, no other editing features are available, which reinforces the feature’s focus on quick and authentic sharing. Users can send an unlimited number of Instants. After sharing a photo, an Undo button appears automatically, giving users a short opportunity to withdraw the image before it is seen. Once delivered, the photo appears as a stack of images in the recipient’s inbox.

Friends can respond by reacting with emojis, replying through Instagram direct messages, or sending their own Instants in return. Each photo disappears immediately after being viewed, and even if it remains unopened, it automatically expires after 24 hours.

Extra Features Available in Instants

Instagram includes several additional features to enhance the Instants experience. Every Instant a user shares is automatically stored in a private archive accessible only to the account owner, where the photos remain available for up to one year. This allows users to revisit the moments they shared even after recipients can no longer access them.

Another feature allows users to transform saved Instants into a Story recap. By selecting photos from the private archive and using the Create recap option, users can combine past Instants into an Instagram Story that can be shared with all followers. Instagram also provides options for correcting mistakes. If a user accidentally sends the wrong photo, they can quickly remove it before the recipient opens it. They also have the option to delete the Instant from the archive, which also removes access for anyone who has not yet viewed it.

For users who prefer not to engage with Instants temporarily, Instagram includes a Snooze feature. By pressing and holding the Instants photo stack in the inbox and swiping right, users can temporarily stop seeing Instants. The feature can be reactivated by repeating the action and swiping left. To strengthen privacy, Instagram says Instants cannot be screenshotted or screen recorded, helping users feel more comfortable sharing personal and temporary moments.

Separate Instants App for Faster Access

Instagram is also experimenting with a standalone Instants app in selected countries. The company says this decision came in response to feedback from users who wanted a quicker and more direct way to access the camera without opening Instagram and navigating to the inbox first.

The standalone app addresses this by opening directly to the camera as soon as it is launched. Users can sign in with their existing Instagram credentials, and the experience remains fully connected to the main Instagram platform. This means Instants shared through the separate app can still be viewed by friends using Instagram, and vice versa.

Instagram says the purpose of this test is to better understand user behavior and improve the overall experience before considering a broader rollout. The standalone app is currently available on both iOS and Android in selected regions.

Safety and Privacy Features

Instagram states that all existing safety and privacy protections available on the main platform also apply to Instants, whether accessed through Instagram itself or through the standalone app. These protections include familiar tools such as Block, Mute, and Restrict, which give users control over who can contact them and send Instants.

Users also maintain control over their audience, since Instants can only be viewed by people specifically selected by the sender, either Close Friends or mutual followers. Instagram’s Community Standards continue to apply to this feature, and the company says it will use detection technology to identify and remove content that violates its policies. Users can also report inappropriate content for review.

Teen Safety Protections

Instagram says Instants is automatically integrated with existing Teen Account protections and Family Center supervision tools. Parents who already monitor their teenager’s Instagram account do not need to complete any additional setup, as the same safeguards automatically extend to both the Instagram-based feature and the standalone Instants app. Time spent using Instants contributes to a teenager’s daily Instagram screen time limit.

In addition, teen accounts have built-in protections that mute notifications and restrict access between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM by default, helping reduce late-night usage. Teen users continue to have access to the full range of Instagram safety tools, including blocking, muting, restricting, content filters, and reporting systems, regardless of whether they use Instants through Instagram or the standalone app. Parents supervising teen accounts will also receive a notification when their teenager downloads the separate Instants app for the first time, helping them stay informed about app usage.

Availability

Instagram announced that Instants became available globally within the Instagram app starting on May 13, 2026. However, the standalone Instants app remains limited to selected countries on both iOS and Android as Instagram continues testing the separate experience before making a wider release decision.
