An internet meme has been circulating around the internet since 2024 and is getting viral again during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Kylian Mbappé, known for his exceptional speed, dribbling and goal-scoring,  is now  "The Dictator" because of that. The joke started in 2024 after a legal spat with French-Algerian influencer Mohamed Henni, who owns a Kebab shop in Marseille.

Since then, football fans have been sharing and uploading memes on social media, not because they have any problems with Mbappé but because they find it funny. At this point, even Mbappé acknowledged it and celebrated with a dictator salute after scoring against Sweden in the round of 32. Let's decode the history of this viral meme phenomenon.

Where the Dictator Mbappé Meme Came From

Mohammed Henni

The joke traces back to March 2024, but it has origins in 2022 when Mbappé signed a massive contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain. During that time, some reports suggested that the contract gave him unprecedented executive power over player transfers, lineups, and hiring managers. Fans jokingly called him PSG's actual "sporting director".

In 2024,  Mohammed Henni jokingly named a menu item after the striker. As a result, Mbappé's lawyers sent a legal notice to Henni's Kebab shop. What's interesting is that, Mbappé Instead of laughing it off, his camp pushed back, and Henni responded publicly that the forward was "turning his name into a dictatorship."

A single line gave members exactly what they needed. They started editing and posting images of Kylian Mbappé on various social platforms, dressed as the famous dictator figures. The joke didn't spread quickly but gradually within the French Football forums during his last years at PSG. Some critics argued that Mbappé had held outsized influence over club decisions.

When he moved to his dream club, Real Madrid. Fans began circulating AI-generated and photoshopped images and footage showing the French forward on typical military platforms. Instead of a French jersey, Mbappé was portrayed wearing uniforms and medals of an autocrat, dictating the fate of teammates, coaches, and even referees. Instagram, TikTok, and X turned a story into a funny recurring meme.

Things got even more wild when Real Madrid sacked their manager, Xabi Alonso, in early 2026. Online speculation implied that it was probably Mbappé behind his exit. Users referenced an earlier Spanish Super Cup incident where Alonso reportedly wanted his players to form a guard of honor for an opponent. Still, Mbappé signaled his teammates towards the dressing room. While none of the influence claims were confirmed, it gave the meme exactly the kind of story it thrives on.

Why the Joke Has Exploded at the 2026 World Cup

France has been performing exceptionally well at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Kylian Mbappé is currently leading the leaderboard along with Lionel Messi with 6 goals in the tournament so far. In a recent encounter against Sweden, France manager Didier Deschamps bowed to Captain Kylian Mbappé for a magnificent performance. Memers saw it as an opportunity to create more meme content.

During a UEFA Champions League game, Mbappé was taking the captain's armband from Dani Carvajal, which is a very usual moment. But even that moment was not spared. The idea behind the dictator meme is that wherever Kylian Mbappé plays, a chain of command runs only through them, irrespective of players, coaches, or ground staff.

His own teammates leaned into the joke as well. During a podcast, PSG and French star Ousmane Dembélé was asked about what he does in his free time, and he mentioned enjoying films about historical dictators. He talked about Mobutu Sese Seko, the longtime ruler of the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others. While it was an offhand comment, fans immediately turned it into a meme.

At this point, the meme is inseparable from Mbappé's public image. He may be the best player in the history of French football, and has already become the all-time leading goal-scorer for France in International football as well as World Cups. But fans are not ready to stop creating memes. Not sure if Kylian is a dictator, but he's the most dominant force in World football right now.

While coaches getting sacked, players getting benched, or a transfer falling through are common events in any football club, Mbappé fans did not stop creating memes. Besides, a YouTube artist, SurNervis, who is known for creating football themed track released a track titled "Kylian Mbappé Dictador Anthem," which many creators are using on Instagram and TikTok.

Mbappé has addressed the viral phenomenon directly, saying that believing that he controls team decisions or undermines squad unity is a "complete farce". He emphasized that every player of Real Madrid and the France National football team is treated equally, and critics are free to say anything they want about him. His pushback didn't slow the joke down; rather, it made it more visible.

Why this meme works

Anything that is not real or slightly exaggerated gets visibility. Whether it was Chuck Norris memes or memes around Zlatan Ibrahimovic's power. Superstars like Kylian Mbappé or Messi carry heavy influence at their club, through transfer leverage, dressing room dynamics, and sheer star power. Mbappé's version of the joke takes that real dynamic and inflates it into satire.

From fans' perspective, Mbappé is one of the most loved football figures, and these memes are just funny rather than mean-spirited. As long as the Real Madrid star keeps performing and delivering on the pitch, the internet will find one way or another to create content around it. Call him a dictator, ruler, or sporting director, but Kylian Mbappé is currently the strongest player in the FIFA World Cup.
