Thousands of spectators, billions tuning in. Celebrities performing. FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies are always special. You cannot pinpoint which was the best, since it's a subjective issue. But most of us are still not over "Waka Waka" yet.

Just like the FIFA World Cup 2026, the opening ceremony of the event will also be unique. Unlike most editions, it won't be hosted in a single stadium, but rather split into three countries. The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup will feature renowned celebrities from Canada, the United States and Mexico.

This "Trilogy" format is happening for the first time, and there will be staggered celebrations across Mexico (June 11), Canada and the United States (June 12). Despite being different places, all the events are conceptually bound together. They are designed by the same Balich Wonder Studio, which produced the opening and closing ceremonies of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony: Why is it special

Apart from being the only World Cup to be hosted by three distinct countries, there are dozens of things that make this event special. There is no generic global theme, and each stadium broadcast is anchored by highly specific cultural motifs.

Inspired by papel picado paper craft, Mexico features massive, delicate and vibrant installations alongside indigenous talent. Canada's event is structured around a giant "Cultural Mosaic" concept, featuring a multi-era countdown meant to take global viewers on a symbolic journey "from coast to coast to coast".

The United States event is centered around a "super shiny, glowing cup" layout, relying heavily on massive LED tech, stadium-wide visual graphics, and modern Hollywood-style pop-culture storytelling. It would be interesting to see how all the countries portray their unique identity along with their hyper-localized global superstars.

25 performances, 24 unique artists, and three countries. So, be ready to witness the Super Bowl-style magical performances. What's interesting is that there is some focus on regional legends along with global pop icons. Tyla is the only artist performing twice, appearing at both the Mexico and USA ceremonies.

The Mexico event will feature 10 artists, including regional legends like Mana and Alejandro Fernandez. Global icon Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy headline the show, performing Dai Dai, the official anthem of the 2026 World Cup. Canada's show features 9 artists, headlined by Michael Buble and Alanis Morissette, along with Nora Fatehi, who is a multicultural global performer.

The United States event features 6 artists and would be the biggest one in terms of advanced tech and star-studded performances. There will be chart-toppers like Katy Perry and Future, Brazilian pop sensation Anitta, K-pop star LISA and Nigerian Afrobeats artist Rema. Besides, you will also witness Tyla again in the USA event.
