On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain is all set to create history by becoming the 9th team to defend their Champions League title. Winning the Champions League is no small achievement, and winning it consecutively shows that the first time was not a fluke. It requires tactical mastery, sustained excellence, and mental resilience to play at this level. Even clubs such as FC Barcelona, Manchester United, and Juventus haven't achieved this so far. In this piece, we have researched and compiled a list of the eight teams that won the Champions League consecutively.

Real Madrid - 5 titles & 3 titles
If you are an FC Barcelona fan, you might not like this. But Real Madrid is still the most successful football club in Europe. With a record of 15 UEFA Champions League titles, they are miles ahead of every football club. Their closest competitor is AC Milan with 7 titles, but there's a huge gap of eight titles, which might not be fulfilled in the upcoming years.
The dominance of Madrid can be understood by the fact that from the inaugural edition in 1956, they did not lose the European Cup until 1961, when they were knocked out by FC Barcelona in the first round with a 4-3 aggregate score. In the next season, they made it to the finals, but Benfica wiped out their dreams of the sixth trophy. However, they repeated the triumph by scoring a hat-trick of titles from 2016 to 2018.
Bayern Munich - 3 titles
A home to legendary players, Bayern Munich is one of the most powerful European clubs and probably the best German football club ever. For decades, they have been dominating the Bundesliga and have won the European Cup / Champions League 6 times. In 2026, they had their strong chances, but PSG's unbeatable dominance killed their hopes.
Their first appearance in the UCL was in 1970; it took them four years to reach their first final in 1974, where they defeated Atletico Madrid in a replay, winning by 4-0. Later, they defeated Leeds United by 2-0 in the 1975 final and AS Saint-Étienne by 1-0 in the 1976 final. Their recent UCL championship final was in 2020, where they defeated PSG by 1-0. And, ever since, they've not been able to move beyond the semi-finals.
Ajax – 3 Titles
The Eredivisie league is one of the most underrated, and has given some iconic players like Luis Suárez, Arjen Robben, Memphis Depay, Virgil van Dijk, and more. Ajax is one of the strongest Dutch teams in the European championships and has won four times. Besides, they do have 28 Eredivisie championships, which makes them invincible in Dutch football. Though they made their first appearance in 1957, it took them twelve years to get into their first UCL final, where AC Milan knocked them out by 4-1.
Two years later, Ajax returned with a new form and lifted their first and second European Cups by defeating Panathinaikos and Inter Milan by 2-0 in the 1971 and 1972 finals, respectively. Eventually, they completed their hat-trick by beating Juventus 1-0 in 1973. These titles were achieved under coaches Rinus Michels (1971) and Stefan Kovács (1972, 1973). Besides, it was the captaincy of Johan Cruyff that revolutionized the fate of Dutch football.

AC Milan – 2 Titles
While the current Italian football is struggling for glory, there was a time when AC Milan used to dominate the football. Associazione Calcio Milan might not be the most successful Serie A team at the moment, but they're still the second most successful club in the European Cup. They've been in the Champions League since its inception and played their first final in 1958, where none other than Real Madrid defeated them by 3-2.
It took them five more years to win their first European Cup title, and they were consistently playing a class-apart football. The real glory came in 1989 and 1990, when they beat Steaua București by 4-0 and Benfica by 1-0, respectively. With two consecutive titles, AC Milan became one of the strongest sides under Arrigo Sacchi, the legendary coach of the Italian team that went to the 1994 FIFA World Cup Final. Now, AC Milan has been waiting for their UCL trophy since 2007.
Inter Milan - 2 Titles
Football Club Internazionale Milano might not always be in the limelight, but it has given some of the most remarkable Champions League performances. The club has produced great players like Zlatan Ibrahimović, Wesley Sneijder, Mauro Icardi, and more. The 21-time Serie A champions have won the European Cup three times. Out of which, they have two consecutive titles in 1964 and 1965.
From 1960 to 1968, Inter was coached by legendary Helenio Herrera, who helped them become "a hard club to beat". They made their first European Cup appearance in 1963, and within a year, they lifted their first continental club trophy by defeating Real Madrid in 1964 and Benfica in 1965. However, they had to wait 45 years for their third Champions League title.
Benfica – 2 Titles
Benfica is the only Portuguese side on this list to defeat Real Madrid in the European Cup final. With 38 Primeira Liga Titles, Benfica is the strongest Portuguese team in the European Cup / Champions League. The club made its continental debut in 1957 and played its first European Cup final in 1961. It was the same year they defeated mighty FC Barcelona in the finals by 3-2.
The story was not over yet. They were set to become the second team to defend their title, and they did it successfully against Real Madrid by 5-3, thanks to the powerful tactics and smart management of Béla Guttmann in both 1961 and 1962. Since then, Benfica has played five UCL finals but hasn't won its third title.

Liverpool - 2 Titles
When you talk about the strongest Premier League teams, there are usually two names: Manchester United and Liverpool. While currently, Manchester City and Arsenal are leading the race, nobody is closer to Liverpool. They have won 70 major titles, including 6 European Cups. Millennials and Gen Z might love "The Reds" because of Steve Gerrard or Mo Salah, but the club has a strong history in the European Cup.
They played their first European Cup in 1964, but did not make it to the finals till Bob Paisley's brilliance led them. In 1977, they played their first European Cup and won against Borussia Mönchengladbach by 3-1, and repeated the same performance in 1978 against Belgian Club Brugge by 1-0. Still, they are one of the strongest English teams in Champions League history, and have been waiting for their seventh title since 2019.
Nottingham Forest – 2 Titles
The biggest surprise on this list is Nottingham Forest. A team that finished 5th last in the Premier League 2026 is the third English team to defend its European Cup title. When English footballer turned Coach Brian Clough joined Nottingham Forest in 1975, Nottingham Forest was a club struggling to even climb the upper half of the table.
Brian's arrival sparked a new hope in the club, and they eventually debuted in the European Cup in 1979, which they surprisingly won against Malmö FF by 1-0. Critics may have thought that it could be a fluke, but in 1980 they defeated German club Hamburger SV by 1-0 to clinch their second successive trophy. Till now, Nottingham Forest have won 11 major titles, including 2 European Cups, 1 UEFA Super Cup, and 8 domestic honors.
Would PSG be able to join the list?
When a defending champion is playing, they face increased pressure and tactical scrutiny. On the other hand, a club that is playing for the first time or after a long break has no points to prove. At the end of the day, football is a sport. And the one who enjoys the game, has a better mindset and adaptability, usually wins. There are times when star-studded lineups fail, and there are also days when underdogs create history.
According to Betfair, PSG are 8/11 favorites to defend the title, whereas the Premier League Champions are 11/10 outsiders. It is expected to be a close match because of PSG's stronger attack and Arsenal's elite defence. It would be interesting to watch whether PSG remains the 24th club to win the Champions League or Arsenal becomes the 25th club, and the seventh English club to grab the title.
