University of Toronto & IISc Partnership: All You Need To Know

The University of Toronto has announced a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science to establish a cutting-edge Centre of Excellence in Mumbai. Announced in March 2026, this partnership aims to leverage AI to predict healthcare systems, early disease diagnosis and enhanced medical training to the healthcare professionals.

Key Highlights Of The Partnership

Development of AI-based tools for predictive healthcare and early diagnosis of acute and chronic illnesses.

The initiative will be primarily based in Mumbai, to strengthen the presence of University of Toronto in India.

To bring improvement in accessing healthcare systems, development of AI tools for early disease diagnosis and provide the necessary training for the next generation of AI and healthcare professionals.

This joint collaboration combines University of Toronto’s academic excellence in AI with IISC’s research expertise in India.

Strengthening Canada-India Research & Innovation

This partnership is part of a broader effort to strengthen research, entrepreneurship and innovation between Canada and India. As per the reports, it will operate through the University of Toronto India Foundation, which was established in 2003 with financial assistance from Tata Trusts to connect researchers with Indian institutions.

Other Broad Collaborations In India

Apart from this new AI center, the University of Toronto has established deep roots in India:

A joint program with IIT-Bombay focuses on supporting startups and creating a two-way innovation talent pipeline.

It has also set up collaborative research with Indian institutions on smart cities, water and sanitation initiatives.

It is also reported that since 2020, as much as $63 million scholarships have been awarded to meritorious Indian students to strengthen its commitment towards education and provide the path for a bright future for the deserving candidates.
