January 22, 2008 was the date when the world lost Heath Ledger, a man who didn't just play the characters, disappeared into them. It was the final role that he played as “The Joker” that escalated his status as a cinematic immortal. 

How Did Ledger Die

The news that Heath Ledger is no longer with us, shocked the entire world. At the age of just 28 years, he was found unresponsive in his Manhattan apartment. According to the official reports from the New York City Medical Examiner's Office, Ledger died of acute combined drug intoxication. His death resulted from the abuse of a combination of several sleeping aids, anti-anxiety medications and painkillers. 

In an interview with one of the reputed media houses, Ledger had openly admitted that he was struggling with chronic insomnia and that he sleeps only two hours a day during the production of The Dark Knight.

The Day Before He Passed Away

Ledger had a few conversations the night before and on the day of his death. One of them was his sister Kate, with whom he usually spoke multiple times a day. She said that she had been warning Ledger about the dangers involved in mixing the medications in the weeks prior to his death. 

Ledger also spoke to his close friend and director Matt Amato the day he died in a similar lighthearted conversation. He also had plans to talk with Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg the following morning about a role as Thomas Hayden in The Chicago 7, per Entertainment Weekly.

On the Day of Ledger’s Death

He was staying in his New York apartment and filming for “The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus.” On Jan 22, 2008, Ledger's housekeeper arrived at his apartment and made an attempt to wake him up. According to the sources, the housekeeper waited outside and tried calling him but in vain. When she entered the room and tried waking him, he didn't respond back either.

Decoding the joker myth

For years, there was a popular myth circulating everywhere that suggested his role in “The Joker” led to his mental decline. However, his close friends and relatives including his sister Kate Ledger, have since clarified that Heath was having the time of his life playing the character of psychopath villain. Thus, it was concluded that this role was not a real reason behind his sudden death, it was majorly the physical exhaustion and the overdose of a combination of prescribed medications that resulted in his untimely death.
