Every time we talk about football, it's either the dominance of South American giants like Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay or the superior capabilities of Spain, France, Germany, or Italy. However, there are always a few teams that have been consistent across all the editions yet remain trophyless.

The FIFA World Cup is not just about champions; it is about embracing the true soul of football, which is inclusivity, belief, and passion. If a young boy from Rosario with growth hormone deficiency can become one of the biggest footballers of the millennium, anything is possible in football. Here, we have listed the best teams yet to win the FIFA World Cup, despite having strong squads, power, and a consistent playing style.

Netherlands

Fans who have witnessed the heroics of Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder know how strong the Dutch team has been. Whether it is the Euro Cup or the FIFA World Cup, the Netherlands has always been one of the strongest football teams that has not yet lifted its first FIFA World Cup. They have been to the finals in the 1974, 1978, and 2010 FIFA World Cups, where they were defeated by West Germany, Argentina, and Spain, respectively. With Virgil van Dijk leading from the front, would they create history in North America? Time will tell.

Portugal

Portugal has been a dominant force in the FIFA World Cup for years, yet they have no titles in their cabinet. Their best performance was in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals, but lost to eventual World Champions England by 2-1. The current Portuguese side no longer depends on Cristiano Ronaldo alone; they have stars like Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Rafael Leão who can be game-changers. The balanced Portuguese side would be a tough nut to crack for rivals.

Croatia

Croatia was a harmless team until they announced their arrival in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where they defeated Japan, Jamaica, and eventually, Germany to get into the semi-finals. They were leading by 1-0 against the mighty France in the semi-final, but Lilian Thuram's heroics helped France register a 2-1 victory and crush Croatian dreams. Two decades later, they were in a strong position to lift the trophy, but France defeated Croatia by 4-2 in the finals. For years, Croatia has come closer to the trophy but has missed it somehow. With 2026 possibly being Luka Modric's last FIFA World Cup, Croatia will be trying to get its first FIFA World Cup.

Belgium

Anyone who follows league football knows the legends Belgium has produced. Whether it was Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku, or the legend Kevin De Bruyne (KDB), every player has shown their potential, yet never went past the third position in FIFA World Cups. It would be a challenge for the new Belgian team to blend experience with youth, with Lukaku, Witsel, and KDB as the only experienced players. Talent was never their problem; it was always about the execution, and if they solved it, they could be as invincible as the French or Spanish team.

Sweden

Sweden

Sweden has been traditionally a strong football team in history. Their first FIFA World Cup appearance was in 1934, where they reached the quarterfinals, but Germany knocked them out. Their best performance was in the 1958 World Cup, where they played the final at the Råsunda Stadium, Solna. It was the same match where legend Pelé got recognized for a standout performance as Brazil won by 5-2. They have given legendary players like Zlatan Ibrahimović, Henrik Larsson, and 1940s star Gunnar Nordahl, but the team has never won the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship. They can annoy opponents, stay compact, and be tactically brilliant, which makes them a dangerous team.

Mexico

Mexico has given birth to legendary players such as Hugo Sánchez, Rafael Márquez, and Jorge Campos, but that could not help them get their first FIFA World Cup. They have reached the quarterfinals twice in 1970 and 1986, and both times were defeated by eventual finalists, Italy in 1970 and West Germany in 1986. Despite not being the champions, teams like Chile or Mexico are a threat to bigger contenders like Argentina, France, or Spain. From 1994 to 2018, Mexico qualified for the round of 16 seven consecutive times. 2026 could be a year of comeback for them and to reestablish themselves.

Hungary

Hungary's journey began in 1934, eventually reaching a legendary peak as the "Golden Team." Their best performances remain the heartbreaking 1938 and 1954 World Cup finals, where they finished as runners-up. Icons like Ferenc Puskás and Sándor Kocsis defined this era of dominance. There was a time when Hungary was one of the strongest teams in Football, but for the last four decades, they have not qualified. Their last appearance was in the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
